The Waters of Compassion: The Waters of Zazen

The cries of the world are not merely human cries but the cries of all sentient and non-sentient beings. Kuan Yin, Kanzeon, Tara as she is sometimes known or Avalokiteshvara (the male emanation of Kuan Yin) is the main protagonist in The Heart Sutra and the Universal Gateway Chapter in the Lotus Sutra. We sing her praises in the Litany of the Great Compassionate One and call her name Kuan Yin: a deep listener and the observer. One thousand eyes, one thousand hands, or portrayed with multiple heads the myriad forms in which she appears an all-embracing presence. “For as long as space endures, for as long as all living beings remain, until then, may I too abide to dispel the misery of the world.” — Koji Shin'ei Alison Brown

About Shuso: Shinei began her zen practice in 1997, taking Jukai in 1998. She became a disciple of Abbot Kyogen Carlson in 2001, maintaining a close teacher-disciple relationship with him until his death in 2014. After moving to Eugene, Oregon in 2017, Shinei began practicing with Abbot Ejo McMullen, becoming his formal disciple in 2020 and then taking Koji ordination in 2023. She was given the dharma name Shinei which means “Sacred Flower.” Zen practice, zazen and the creative arts have been essential to her life. Her quest originally motivated and sustained through difficult early experiences and the integration of her painting and writing with formal zen practice.
